The Discipline of Gratitude

By Jeff Walker

OK, we’re only a few days from the end of the
“Farewell Tour”… so I *should* be sending you
some hypey marketing stuff. But it’s Thanksgiving
and there’s something else on my mind - and
that’s GRATITUDE.

A year or so ago I wrote a note for my list about
gratitude… and this weird thing I call the Discipline
of Gratitude.

I didn’t write it specifically for Thanksgiving…
because it’s something I do my best to practice
every day. But it sure does fit today…

Of course, I’m not perfect (by ANY stretch of the
imagination)… but I have noticed a direct
correlation between the amount of GRATITUDE I have
during the day and how those days go.

I’ve also noticed that the more gratitude I have
in my life, and the more I hang out with other
people with lots of gratitude in their lives…
well, the better and more graceful my life is.

I don’t know if I could prove it in a court of
law, but I absolutely KNOW it’s a direct
correlation.

So with today being Thanksgiving (at least in the
U.S… if you’re outside the U.S., this holiday
might be one of our greatest contributions to the
world)… well, I couldn’t think of a better day
to send this to you. I know that I felt inspired
again just reading it - and I thought it might do
the same thing for you…

Because I just had an incredible day. It was a day
filled with family and close friends, good food,
games and friendly (but fierce) competition, lots
of time spent outdoors… all the ingredients for
my perfect day.

It really left me feeling grateful… something
I’ve been feeling a lot lately.

After all, my life has changed radically since I
started my online business… when I started out,
my wildest dream was a few thousand dollars a
month from my business.

Well, I’ve done a bit better than that. :-)  My
business has grown to be 20 times bigger than I
could ever imagine - even in my wildest dreams.

In fact, when I look at the magnitude of it all, I
just have to laugh at what’s happened - it’s
almost hard for me to believe… but it all
happened, and the truth is that it really wasn’t
all that hard to pull off.

And that’s just the start of it. I’ve got a
wonderful family - a great marriage and fantastic
kids. And we’re all healthy and strong.

We live in a beautiful place - exactly where we
want to live.

And I’ve got amazing friends who help turn my
life into a crazy adventure.

And I’ve got this crazy business where I’ve been
able to help people from all over the world start
businesses. I think that entrepreneurs are going
to be the saving grace in this world… and I’m
proud to say that I’ve helped a LOT of
entrepreneurs start or grow their businesses.

There’s a lot of people that were able to quit
their jobs and start successful businesses by
following my teaching.

So yes, I’m grateful. Very grateful.

And that’s important - because I’ve learned that
being grateful is one of the most critical life
skills you can have.

I call it the “Discipline of Gratitude”…

Now I know that’s a lousy name, because it sounds
like a lot of work. But stick with me, because
it’s actually really simple…

It’s just a matter of consciously taking time on a
regular basis to acknowledge everything you have
to be grateful for.

And trust me, we all have LOTS to be grateful for.

Please humor me on this… just take five minutes
right now, and just reflect on everything that
you’re grateful for… this is even more powerful
if you actually speak those things out loud. And
it’s even better if you write them down.

Go ahead… take a few minutes and do it right
now. I’ll still be here when you get back.

When you’re ready, scroll down.

So how did that feel? Do you feel happier?
Lighter? More alive?

This really is a wonderful exercise to do each
morning when you wake, or at night when you go to
bed.

But here’s the magic part - when you exercise the
Discipline of Gratitude you will not only be
happier… but you’re going to start to achieve
more in your life.

Now I know this is starting to sound really “out
there” and “woo woo” - in fact, I almost deleted
this entire email because I know a lot of people
won’t think this has anything to do with business
and marketing.

But trust me, this is powerful stuff. I have
experienced it over and over in my life.

It comes down to this: you can go through your
life with a chip on your shoulder, wondering why
things aren’t coming easier to you… or you can
go through your life feeling grateful for all you
have.

It’s your choice.

But I’ve been around a LOT of super-successful
people, and they pretty much all fall on that
gratitude side of things.

Bottom line - if you want to achieve great things
in your life (and great success), then the
Discipline of Gratitude is one of the key
life-skills you need to master.

The good news is that it’s also one of the
easiest.

Have a happy and loving Thanksgiving.  :-)

best regards,
Jeff

P.S. I know this might seem sorta weird for me to
be writing about this type of stuff to you…
don’t worry, tomorrow I’ll be to writing about
marketing and online business.

I’ve got some more stuff to give away before I
have to shut it all down on November 30th.

Tomorrow I’ll be back to giving away more Case
Studies and other content. But for me, today is
all about gratitude.

    Yes, Jeff…
You are right…this is something I never knew anything about until 20mths ago…when my world exploded…
But ever since then…I’ve done my best (not everyday, but most) to practice the “Discipline of Gratitude”
Without all the $$$$ details…my world has changed, the $$$ dont really matter, because everyday when I wake…the sun shines…the ocean water is refreshing (even in the middle of winter, my smile gets larger, and those little things, that I never saw before, seem to grow in monsterish proportions!

Happy Thanks-giving to you, your family and friends…and all the PLM crew…

Excellent post Jeff and excellent timing :)

The majority of people are stuck on blame, shame and regret that they just get more of it and more of it.

If they would just step back and be grateful for what they have they will get more of it and more of it.

Thanks for reminding us about how important gratitude is.

    Gratefully,

Not weird at all. Good stuff for sure. Here’s my list.
My bed, clean food, clean water, clean air, my health, my freedom, my right to choose what I want, my sobriety, my recovery, all my pain and what I learned from it, my success, my failures, my friends, my mind is intact, I know right from wrong, my education that I’ve acquired, my drive to get better, my apartment has heat today if I need it (I live in AZ so that’s rare :-)), its sunny just about every day where I live, my taste, my tact w/ people, my vision for something bigger, my certainty that one day I’ll be out of debt, Tony Robbins and Eben Pagan and the opportunity to learn from those guys, my ability to pay it forward, my growth, my resources, my spirituality, the internet, the guys that teach how to use it to get free from modern day slavery, warm weather, the women I work with in the beauty industry, my opportunity to make a living helping women feel beautiful, my level of knowledge in fitness, nutrition, and the ability to be healthy, my ability to overcome and how far I’ve gotten, the 12-14 hours a day that I GET to work on creating a new living for myself and my ability to do it…..this could go on all night!

That’s your way of thinking, and I’m nearly thinking the same way.
But I must say it’s hard to apply this every days.
Sometimes you are worry about the future.
    Just a word:
I’ve created and made this sentence mine :
” You can put a knee on the ground, even both, but do not stop trying to get up ”

And Happy thanksgiving for you and your family.
Sorry but here, in France, we don’t ever know what it means. ;)

Jeff, What a wonderful letter. Thank you, I am working on my letter of gratitude right now. What I love is the Disciplined Gratitude…it is so true. Because it really is easy to be ‘great full’ when things go well, but have a bad day or a bad spell and it may not be easy. Yet, if you have the daily discipline of finding what you can be greatfull for–things change. Wonderfully.

A few years ago I had three major crises’ happen in my life. Every night I would write in my prayer journal 25 things I was grateful for…and there were days it was so tough, i couldn’t think of anything. So, I would start with things like eyelashes, and nose hair…yes, i know sounds wierd. Told you i would stretch, but the wonderful thing about it was, it would get me to thinking about what eyelashes do for us. Keep the rain from coming in, catch lint and dust from getting into our eyes, and make our eyes so attractive…Then, I would start to see the miracles of life. By the time I got the number 5 or 6 it was really flowing, the gratitudes swept over me and life was good again.

Thank you Jeff for your generosity-you give us so many tools, free of charge and have such savvy advice. I am new to Internet marketing and your advice has assisted me in moving my businesses forward. God’s blessings to you and I hope even though you are taking all these offline soon–that you will continue sending us your love letters. It is so clear you love doing this.

Nice one Jeff. I am full time online and know exactly how you feel I bought your PLF after seeing it on the Internet Millionnaire and since then, things have just got better and better.

I think and feel the way you do every day. I get to work from home and for the past few years have seen all the good stuff happen with regards to my 4 and 6 year old kids as they grow. From the first words to the first stumbling steps and that means more than any amount of money could give me.

I have lost many of my old materialistic ways and now the money just brings me time which is the most precious commodity we can have.

It chimes nicely with a ‘talking to’ that my flat mate gave me last night about my recent attitude (I’ve been in a real negative rut on everything - work, family, bureaucracy, politics, the world) and how I need to do something to address it. I think you’ve eloquently described a wonderfully simple activity that fulfills an area that many of the self-help gurus recommend.
I’m feeling better already and if I may, I’d like to make sure that my own website points at this gem.

Thanks Jeff for being different. I am on a lot of lists and get probably 50 emails every day, most of them pressing me to buy the next great thing that’s come out.. It does become tiresome at times.. Especially when they’re all pushing the same thing and they’re giving so called $4999 bonuses for buying through their link (or so they’d have you believe). Most of these great bonuses are old products that aren’t selling any more so they just use them to sell other peoples stuff.. (It must work because they all do it..)

Anyway forgive my rant.. Your email was refreshing and I did the exercise and you’re definitely right! I’m glad you and your Family had a great thanksgiving (I’m from the UK so we don’t celebrate that one..) and hope you all have a great Christmas and prosperous New Year

Gratitude is a good frame of mind, that creates positivity, I like it! Although sometimes it seems easy to forget.

Hey Jeff - mate you don’t have to apologise for one word of this post.

There are any number of valid money-making models out there, and ready-made tools for sale that will help get anyone there who is prepared to change mental gears and just ‘get stuck into it’. And a good list-master such as yourself will certainly bring to our attention the latest and greatest of these products & information.

However, for many people drawn to the promise of IM, it is precisely this “mental side” that can sometimes be a greater ( and more insidious) hurdle to success…so kudos for broaching it and enjoy your holiday over there

    Hi Jeff,
Just want to thank you for sharing this nugget with us ..yes being in a Gratitude state of Mind is not something that naturally springs to mind when you are up against it as many of us are.
But when you take a moment to reflect that half the world is starving and many don’t reach their 5th Birthdays then we all have a lot to be thankful for especially in the West.
The Law of Attraction is basically the same philosophy or another side to the Gratitude State of Mind.

I think we should practice this exercise everyday. As corny as it sounds, almost (I’m not all that disciplined yet) every day, I go over, in my mind, a list of the things I’m grateful for.

They range from the lofty “family, friends and health” to the more mundane “hot coffee, cold orange juice and single malt scotch”.

It’s a good idea to remind ourselves of the things and people in our life that we appreciate. It makes us more conscious of them. It reminds us of how important they are. And it prevents us from taking them for granted.

Jeff - This Discipline of Gratitude …

Is it something like giving Thanks for my Baby Brown Eyes opening up for another fantastic day. Or like Praising God for a blessing of my next breath of air and the possibility of helping one more person.

To some the Truth may sound “out there” or “woo woo”. However many if not most will agree “Gratitude” daily is a “key life-skill” which is “easy” and gives one pause to their existence and all that is to be appreciated.

I thank the Lord for giving you a World Wide platform that allows you to share your wisdom and your heart. You are blessed indeed!

    Hi Jeff
Thank you for your wonderful comments and you are so right. If we have enough money to own and use a computer, then we have a lot in life to be grateful for. When things are tough in life and I’m going through a rough patch, such as trying to get through a cold wet miserable day or figuring out how I will pay the bills, I just remind myself that I have so much to be very grateful for every day. I am so grateful that I don’t live in a country that is at war, or where people are struggling to find enough to eat or keep warm and dry. This makes my issues pale into insignificance. I am so lucky that I have choices in life that I can have control over. Devloping an attitude of gratitude is so important for the whole of life and for many big problems in the world as a whole.

    Hi Jeff

Thanks for the post. Its so good to hear stories like this. I myself have just taken a HUGE leap of faith with the internet marketing.

Ive recently given up my day job to concerntrate on marketing full time. he money isnt coming in yet, but i am confident in my abilities. Ive been online for 4 years and its been tough! as you well know yourself.

I attended the WIS last weekend and i am off to see Armand this weekend. Networking! I have 3 children a wonderful partner. They have stuck by me (just!) over the last few years and continue to do so. To be able to reward them with the benifits of my hard work would be wonderful.

I feel like i am finally moving out of the “woods” and entering the “clearing” in the forest, if that makes any sense!!

Ive got 3 products and the worldwide license on them and the are very good! (not IM stuff, parental software, internet and mobile phone applications). This is why i gave up my day job, to concerntrate on these products.

If i dont take that leap of faith, ill always ask myself one question…..”what if…”

So, to all those of us that stick this game out, to those of us who finally find the end of the rainbow. Good Luck And Thanks to everyone for the knowledge, advice and support including your good self Jeff!

My software will be coming to a pc or mobile near you very soon!

Thanks again for the post, it has lifted me today. Its just what i needed!

It is true that things appear in your life at the moment that we truly need them and the more grateful we are for the things we already have, the more “RICHES” (whatever your defination of riches may be) the more of them drop into your lap!

Thanks, Jeff. This is a great reminder that being “thankful” is important every day of the year … not just on Thanksgiving Day. Being grateful and focusing on what is good in our life (instead of turning our attention toward our problems or “challenges”) changes everything, both inside and out. I appreciate you taking the time to share about “real life” stuff in addition to providing great business and marketing information. May you and your family have a truly blessed Thanksgiving!

    Dear Jeff,

You wrote from your heart and said everything really well. Gratitude as a way of life cannot be beat. I know, I’ve been on both ends of the spectrum. In fact, if you thank God all the time no matter what, the light at the end of whatever tunnel you are in shines that much brighter and you have a happiness deep inside of you that is priceless!

Hey Jeff, don’t be nervous, one of the greatest gifts you can give anyone is the gift of wisdom, and being grateful is possibly the wisest, most powerful things a man can be.

In fact I’d go as far as to say that it can actually change your life - it sure changed mine!

4 years ago I got married and 6 months later my wife and I had a beautiful baby boy, sounds great I know, but at the time I was so stressed, I was a mess! Overwhelmed by my new responsibilities (I suddenly had 3 mouths to feed, not just one) I was really struggling. I was unemployed, my career had hit the skids, no one wanted to hire me, my credit cards were maxed out and I had no way to pay the rent!

I had to suffer the indignity of going cap in hand to my Dad and my wife’s Dad to pay the rent!
Man that hurt, I can’t tell you how miserable I felt, I felt like such a failure, and I knew I was starting to suffer from symptoms of depression and anxiety. I’d hit rock bottom.

Then something miraculous happened! In the midst of my despair I had an epiphany and realized that I had to start being grateful for what I had in my life if I was ever going to stop the fear, self loathing and negativity that were clouding my mind and making me miserable.

I shared that with my wife and we came up with a plan. She found some ribbon that we had used in our wedding and we created a practice of starting every morning with a ‘prayerful’ kind of time where we connected with our hearts and thanked the universe for everything we had in our lives, and after each thing we could be grateful for, we tied a knot in the ribbon.

Holding that ribbon in your hands every morning you could ‘feel’ the knots growing in number, and really get that we actually had a lot to be grateful for.

We thanked the universe for each other, for our son, for our friends, for the support of our families, for the roof we had over our heads, for the food on our plates, for a sunny day, for the beautiful trees we could see out our window - all the ’silly’ simple stuff that it’s SO EASY to take for granted!

This simple practice of gratitude changed our energy and I’m convinced that it changed our lives.

I started to think more clearly and the dark clouds began to lift. After a while we expanded the practice and started thanking the universe for things that hadn’t happened yet. My gratitude became a kind of prayer that went like this:

“I’m so happy and grateful that I have my own business using my research and writing skills for the highest and best good of my clients, and my clients clients.”

3 months later I had started my own internet business. It’s now 3 years on and we are out of debt, business is great, I’ve currently got the best clients I have ever had, and I’m about to do a product launch that will change our lives forever! Man life is exciting!

BTW, I haven’t purchased product launch formula yet, but I’m SO GRATEFUL TO YOU for what you have shared on this blog, because I’ll make enough money from this launch to be able to afford product launch the next time you open it.

So happy Thanksgiving to everyone reading this blog, and thanks Jeff for sharing about gratitude, because I believe it is the source of miracles.

    Jeff,

I really appreciate this post. As I try to make my way in internet marketing trying to get away from my 9-5 grind, I realized how many people would love to have a 9-5 right now!

So I have changed my thought process on it all. I am now happy to be working for someone else, while I prepare to work for myself.

I use to “hate” having to work for the “man”, but I realize what an opportunity I have. I am blessed to be able to make a great living working for them by day, and for me by night. I have the best of both worlds right now.

I thank God for ability to work on my internet business and not be so stressed to hit it big quickly to pay my bills. I can nurture and grow my business the right way on integrity and ethical principles without having to trick and mislead people along the way.

Jeff, thanks for all that you do for the internet marketing community and for the world. I really enjoy your teachings and trainings.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

Living in the U.K. as I do means we do not celibrate Thanksgiving but of course your email really has little to do with the holiday, it’s more an approach to life.

I myself, sadly, suffer from very poor health making productivity and focus very very difficult. Biut non the less I always adopt the same approach as you have outlined here.

No matter how bad things can get, there are always 1000’s and then some who are far worse off. So despite the challenges that life throws our way we always have things to be grateful for.

Here is a tool you might find useful. It has zero to do with IM and everything to do with saving some time and getting to know when desired items become available at Amazon.

Hope you enjoy it and find it useful. If you buy from Amazon as I do, it will save you time and money.

Thank you for these heart lifting words!

You are one of my three absolute favorite internet marketers (Kern and Dale being the other two). Genuine, generous and gracious, your stuff just works and I never hesitate to recommend you to newbies and veterans.

In stark contrast my team and I cannot close down on the 30th. We’ve a global launch of a product/service that’s taken three of us five hard years to build. We’re in pre-pre launch right now (Help!!!), it’s nerve wracking and tough going, but what we’ve created might just be a real market disruptor and change the lives of hard working business owners all over the world.

The good news is we’re armed with PLF, I’m studying PLM right now and all we need is just a bit of luck…and just maybe we’ll be in the position to write a similar post in the New Year and for you a compelling and remarkable case study.

In the meantime an industrial strength thank you for the inspiration, the great teaching and this post.

We wish you and your family all the best for the season and a joyous and prosperous 2010.

Spot on Jeff, full marks for having the courage to write this sort of stuff to people who are probably business orientated and some of whom will think that making money is where it’s at. Can I suggest that we not only have to focus on gratitude every day, we also have to focus on where this world is going and what sort of future we want to create for ourselves … and I’m talking about the whole of humanity and the world we live in. The recent financial debacle (which grew out of our greed for money) is a big time wake up call that we cannot continue down the road we have been on. In NLP terms it is madness to keep doing what you’ve been doing and expect to get a different result somehow. Your excellent comments about the power of gratidude reminded me of a website I only discovered yesterday http://noosphere.princeton.edu/index.html where their Global Consciousness Project has proved scientifically that coherent group consciousness worldwide can be detected with appropriate instruments … their graphs on the effect of 9/11 are astonishing, and very exciting ! If we act together there is nothing we cannot achieve, so let’s start with GRATITUDE and then see what we can do to guide the evolution of our species down a path we will enjoy. Doing nothing is never an option, and carrying on as we have been doing isn’t either. Surf’s up, and we can either ride the wave or be swamped by it. The choice is our. Onwards and up !

It’s a challenge sometimes but one that I welcome. My financial health is in shambles because of it and at times it becomes overwhelming, but like you I too had a wonderful day. You see I realized today just how fantastic my life really is. My son just remarried to a woman that is so perfect for him that I couldn’t have hand picked a better daughter in-law or a better mother for my georgous grandaughter. My parents are still with me and at 91 that is pretty cool! I am able to eat well and out of necessity have become a pretty good cook. My enviornment is filled with love and laughter. It is serendipidous that this morning of all mornings I saw your email and decided to read it. This is kind of a long way to say to you THANKS! This was worth waking up to. I have seen you in 2 seminar presentations - all under the same title, organized by one man. As a consequence of that I am on your list & I get to read valuable info on the case studies you are posting & I am very grateful for that!

You give off a pleasant vibe & it’s easy to see that your happiness is derived from having a family that you love, you are constantly growing in achievements, and that you have true friends that you enjoy interacting with - since you share the same mindset.

Beyond that, you believe in reciprocity and you help out. Thus the giving, in thanksgiving.

Is it really necessary though, for all you marketing guys to blank out all the people that want to help you out in our way?

And by all people - I mean me =)

Happy Thanks Giving to you, your family & all the folks you love & appreciate.

And yet, if you had told me even six months ago that I would be saying a prayer of gratitude every morning, I would have patted you on the head and suggested you kept taking the pills. Things happened. And I found that by being grateful for what I had rather than being resentful for what I didn’t have not only made my life feel more special but brought more of the good things my way. How it works, I haven’t a clue. But it does. Nice to hear it works for you. too.

Thanks for that Jeff and happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Just an observation after spending 35 years in steel making. If there’s one thing that I’ve found in my long working life it’s this; people who bitch and moan about their lot in life are exceedingly negative and should be avoided at all costs. On the other hand, people who are grateful for even the smallest of things in their life, are a joy to be with because of their positive outlook. I believe you are absolutely right. Just the other day I told my 13 yo son, that the bag of milk he brought home was such a treat. I have carried tonnes of groceries from the store and into our home over the years. The glass of milk that I had from this bag that HE brought home was the best tasting EVER! In the last year and a bit I found and returned two purses and received a ‘thank you’ and a thank you card. Which was more than I expected actually, because, I returned them knowing that it made me feel wonderful. Only a few hours after expressing my gratefullness to my son about the milk, I found a man’s wallet on our yard, contacted him, he verified the wallet was actually his and was at my door in under 30 min. to pick it up. When he left he tucked something into my hand. I just about fell over when I realized that he had given me $100.00 reward!

Some people might say that the events of that day are just a coincidence, but my heart and soul tell me quite differently.

I know that you know what I am saying, but it might help someone else to give daily, (or the Discipline of), Gratitude a try and experience this for themselves.

    Blessed Be,

    Vicki

This really struck a chord with me Jeff. I think you’re absolutely right 100% and further, I don’t think we can have one without the other (success without gratitude).

One day some crazy scientist is going to invent a machine that will measure all this stuff - and prove it in a “court of law” :))

Thanks again for the “lift”. I’m grateful for that. Whoops! There we go again :))

    Hey Jeff,

Thanks for taking the time to write that email. I am grateful for many things in my life and you are one of them… By helping so many entrepreneurs get an edge in today’s tough marketplace.

Please do me a favor and never ever apologize for expressing gratitude or positive feelings about who you are… After all, it’s your blog and it’s your life work you’re sharing! Be proud to be an example and lead the way for many others. Gratitude is a big part of one’s personal development. You are in part who you are because of it. So don’t be apologizing to us for it.

I wish you and all our American friends a very happy Thanksgiving!

Yes gratitude, but you must give back. Being blessed to be given the talents you have and succeeded the way you have is one thing but don’t think it can’t end overnight, it can and has done to a lot of people like me. Fortunately mine is only financial and that is my blessing not sickness or a child with problms. You’d be better making a Thanksgiving pledge like — by this time next year I am going to identify ten people on the floor and bring them back—provided they make a pledge to you to do the same this time next year. Thats a much better solution for someone with talents like you have — and far more rewarding than just making a charitable monetary donation. Those who no longer have credit cards and can’t get going because of that. Now there’s a Thanksgiving gratitude you can give the World and make not just new friends for life but their families and the familes the following year and the following year. Give and you will get is what what I was taught when I grew up! Happy Thanksgiving

Great post Jeff. I don’t think that it’s a coincidence that many successful people have the same views as you on the power of gratitude. I think it’s Tony Robins who talks of living life with an ‘Attitude of Gratitude’ and it doesn’t seem to have done him or the many Internet Guru’s who have been through his programs any harm :). I know one thing, you feel much better inside when you focus on being grateful for what you’ve got instead of moaning about what you haven’t. I’m a Brit who is very grateful to be living in the USA and enjoying this wonderful holiday.

    Happy Thanksgiving Jeff.

Gratitude is important for a wonderful life. Our most important daily choice is our attitude. It colors the day and transforms our reality for good or evil.

Being grateful for all the blessings God has given us allows more good thing to flow into our lives. We are happier when we focus on being thankful for everything.

I am grateful for all the entrepreneur heroes I have met, photographed and call friends over the last 9 years. To inspire students and their parents to become entrepreneurs, I am creating a entrepreneur heroes page for each.

Hopefully, everyone will write their heroes story based on Frank Kern’s Heroes marketing system and allow me to post it on their page. This will inspire people who have lost jobs, can’t find jobs or have given up looking for a job.

They will achieve great rewards when they create their own job by becoming an entrepreneur. The heroes entrepreneur stories will create a new financial Renaissance, strengthen families and restore communities. Entrepreneurs are the lifeblood of every civilization.

Check out your page and see if your photo is okay. I have lots of choices for your over the years.

I look forward to your heroes story. I know everyone else does also.

I was grateful for the things I didn’t have at that time but most it has magically come forth since then! Now I run a brand new, successuful fine art photography gallery in Iceland admidst the deepest recession since the great recession. Iceland was hit excepeially hard but it didn’t hit me. It could have been so easy to act as a victim and feel angry and helpless as the economy collapsed.

No! I decided not to partake in this turmoil and make my own destiny. That has become a reality against all odds and I’m very, VERY grateful for that.

Happy thanksgiving to all who appreciate it.

    Hi Jeff,

Thank you for not deleting this e-mail. The Discipline of Gratitude is a very powerful thing and it should be shared with others who may need it most. There are so many people out there struggling today with the “worst thing that ever happened” to them. It is important for us to reflect from time to time about how blessed we really are as we look around and see others who are far more challenged by their circumstances than we are. When someone else falls down, it makes us stronger to hold out our hand and help pick them back up.

You have many talents, skills, and successes to share and you give back to those who struggle to find their voice so they too can provide value to the world, just as you did. When each of us is grateful for what we have, and we “pay it forward” it may seem like a small gesture of kindness at the time, but the collective ripple effect can be enormous. Times seem hard right now to so many of us who struggle, but the process of falling down and picking ourselves back up is what makes us smarter, stronger, motivated, and more experienced.

I would like to express my gratitude to you and your personal network of internet marketing geniuses who have provided me with the knowledge and tools this year that I needed to pick myself back up after I got knocked down and wiped out. Specifically I am grateful to you, John Reese, Frank Kern, Eben Pagan, Yanik Silver, Ferny and Raymond, Mike Dillard, John Carlton, Perry Belcher, Ryan Diess, Ed Dale, and so many more whose lists I am on, who have encouraged, inspired, and reached out with all your collective talent and experience to help “the little guy” who is still struggling to make that one big breakthrough in life that turns everything around. Thank you for your integrity and for caring about us who are still struggling to climb out of the trenches of life. Most of all thank you for being grateful and for showing the humility that connects you with the readers on your list.

Your absolutely right Jeff. Gratitude is key. I love the term the “discipline of gratitude”. Discipline has gotten a bad rap lately. Probably in the last 50 years or so. But as you know to accomplish anything worthwhile in life call for discipline. The problem is that people look at the negative side of discipline, what they’re giving up but the truth is they’re gaining a lot more of value through discpline. And I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that when you’re in an attitude of gratitude you seem to be working on a different level accomplishing things on a higher level and even attracting the things that resonate with your higher purpose, whether that’s in business or your personal life.

I’ve never emailed a marketer about one of their letters but I felt compelled to do that today. BTW I’m sure you’ve watched the movie The Secret but if you haven’t do so. What you might not have known is the The Secret was inspired by a book called The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D Wattles in the early twentieth century. I highly recommend you get it. There’s a whole chapter on the power of gratitude among some other powerful powerful concepts. Again great letter.

    Nicely done and timely.
Practicing gratitude (gratitude exercise) is one of the techniques of positive psychology and has a fair amount of research supporting its ability to improve mood, increase satisfaction and ,even, promote happiness.
It presents a major mind shift from always looking for what’s wrong–the highly valued critical thinking that we’re all trained in by school and work.
Keep up the good work and this topic isn’t even close to weird. If you’d like to approach weird, I can come up with suggestions!

Thank you for this message Jeff. It wasn’t weird at all . In fact it was very timely, considering the shape of society.

I believe that business and success are completely dependent on gratitude and compassion. Not in just the work one does, but in how we interact with others. A customer can become a friend and a friend can become a customer, but only if you empathize and show that gratitude you mentioned.

For today though… just enjoy the ones you love.

    Hi Jeff

I have read through this and all I want to say is: Thank you.

And I suggest you to take your time to read a book called “Hooponopono - Zero Limit”. It is because what you say in this post is quite similar to what this book is talking about.

You will be much inspired by its content, just like I did.

    Happy ThanksGiving day!

I am thankful for your reminder today. :-) As a newbie on the internet, I have been somewhat overwhelmed with a lot of the hype and pitches in my inbox daily. This is a refreshing change of pace and solid reminder of how blessed we are here in North America -even when times seem tough.

Well done on having the courage to send this message out.

Gratitude is a very powerful emotion, especially when expressing thanks in advance for something that still is yet to manifest. eg. “Thanks for my new home. I love been able to sit out on the sundeck relaxing by the pool and enjoying the great outdoors”.

Even expressing gratitude for what you have and how you feel in the present will ensure that you will seldom feel unhappy. How can you when you always find something to be thankful for?

    Happy Thanksgiving Jeff!
I think that this message is totally appropriate. As someone who is struggling to grow her business, it’s very easy to get bogged down with,”Why isn’t my business bigger/better/more profitable/etc…. But as you say, I am here to live another day. I have a great husband who supports me and our family so that I CAN work on my business and not have to work the 9-5. I have 2 healthy robust kids that also keep me very busy but again, I am very grateful to be so involved in their lives and development. Finally, I have a business that I am passionate about and have the opportunity to pursue. So yes, Gratitude is completely appropriate. Thanks again for the reminder and have a wonderful day with your family!

For giving some of us (me) who would never have been able to purchase PLF an opportunity to learn from it, for your time and energy in creating it, and for expressing the gratitude you just did for all of that. Too often I’ve seen Big Internet Marketers be slick and not human enough and it’s refreshing to see such warmth.

    Hi Jeff!

Thanks for this - isn’t amazing how one shift in our focus can change so much?

And while it may sound a bit whoo-whoo, it’s not.

In fact, if you wanted to create a formula around this it would be:

Focus on gratitude = long term success
    (FOG=LTS)

well, that may fall apart a bit with FOG, but you get the point!

    Happy Thanksgiving

It’s so easy to forget to remember what we’re thankful for in our lives, but once you make it part of your daily “things” to do, it’s simple.

Positive always has attracted positive. There is so much negativity in the world, it can really drag a person down IF you let it.

I love your post for the day! Each day for me begins with prayer, and the first part of my prayer is gratitude. For each of us this is something deeply personal and our circumstances are diverse (yet similar in so many ways). At any rate, I wanted to reach back out to you and thank you for sharing.

We actually met about this time last year at a conference real estate conference in Las Vegas. I won a set of Bose headsets for answering a FaceBook question correctly and later sent you “Beyond Bullet Points.” Drop me a line sometime and have a great Thanksgiving.

    Hi Jeff,

There is a very important purpose and benefit that comes to all of us when we acknowledge our need to be grateful. You do not have to be rich to count your blessings and, as the now ancient song of the 50’s stated it, “When you are worried and you can’t sleep, just count your blessings instead of sheep and you will fall asleep counting your blessings.”

In essence, that song is encouranging all of us to be thankful to God for what we have… to be grateful for all things in life. The one asset that we have is life itself, comprised of the years, days, hours, minutes, seconds and nano-seconds given to us when we are born.

When time has run its course, our assets in this life are over. It’s “time out” for marketing on a permanent basis. Should we believe in the hereafter, as I do, all of this life is in preparation for the next and what we store up in heaven by the good things we do to help others in need is waiting for us.

The Son of God helped all of us to see into that next life when He said, “Store up treasure in heaven where neither rust or corruption can take it from us, nor thieves steal it, for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

Perhaps, in all that we do, a part of being grateful is giving to those less fortunate. For those who find themselves caught up in the current financial mess that America is in, it is good for us to help them with a hand up.

That, Jeff, is one way you are being grateful and THAT you never need to apologize for inferring or saying. I do hope you and your family have a most wonderful Thanksgiving and that the blessings of God pour into your life with the happiness He brings with His presence. With His blessings on your life, the time that fleets by, the life and talents you have been given, will not be lost now or to the eternity awaiting us.

    Your appreciative and grateful associate,

    William Davis

  168. Kenneth E. Tucker Says:

so. ‘out there’ and ‘woo woo’ is what ‘happens’ when a straight ahead marketer/businessman (finally) connects and shares the ‘value’ of the value of gratitude, eh?

this ‘connection’ has been around forever, but, it’s usually ‘lost’ in the hyper-competitiveness of ‘making it’ in a dog-eat-dog business world.

the other end of gratitude is ‘giving back’ and anyone who’s ever read Og Madinos work, specifically ‘The Greatest Salesman in the World’ KNOWS that the ’secret’ to success in all things business is ‘giving to get’, and, being grateful for the opportunity to give to get.

    It’s not complicated, it’ simple.

    Happy Thanksgiving.

Hi, I’m new to your list as of just yesterday. And I appreciate your writing this post about gratitude. There are a lot of people wanting to grow their business by tapping into a power that is greater than themselves. I know I’m one of them. And the expression of thankfulness is one of the best ways to tap into that power.

I followed the link to your pages because I received it from someone whose course I’m registered for and I was curious to see the videos. And I trust what he sends. But I might very well have unsubscribed from your list without today’s message.

    Thanks Jeff and Happy Thanksgiving.

This was the first email I opened this morning. I have in the past year gone from a comfortable six figure income to the verge of bankruptcy and I am now setting out on a new course of making a living online. I suppose like many who are in similar situations I am always looking for whatever knowledge expert online marketers such as yourself are giving away. I believe Eben Pagan coined the term “moving the freeline”.

Really, if people spent the time to learn, and took action on, just what you and others give away for free, it would be a multimillion dollar education.

Now I did not spill my guts about my current financial situation as a “poor me” I will be just fine. Rather as an acknowledgment of what you shared with us today. As I said, I read your email first thing thinking I was going to learn some useful marketing tip. Maybe the “one” that would show me the money.

I read it,thought about it and started writing down the things I was grateful for.
After filling a couple of pages I stopped and realized that for so many reasons this is the best time in my life. A life filled with blessings, good fortune and amazing opportunity. A life that is been a blast and yet is just beginning.

Thanks for this little gift that can make a huge difference if we actually follow through and do it. I know how I am going to start my days from now on…
…and I am grateful that you shared it with me.

Many native cultures said something like this before every gathering and meeting. Imagine if we did this in our culture? My friend is a Mohawk chief, and he has told me that if this happened wars would end and the planet would be healed.

This is from the Iroquois people. This friend, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, shared it with a school I used to work for.

Just Beautiful Jeff, along with all your followers, a big compliment to all of you. you never seem to amaze me “NEVER”. Gratitude comes in many sizes. From happy and thankful to having eyelashes to winning a new car! It seems these days everyone just wants a little more money than they have had in the past. my daughter and wife were in a car accident a few years ago. They both are alive & Well, for that I am grateful. It is nice to make more money in life ( I think everyone agrees).but it is nice to see the people that are making money in good ways. like helping other people or helping an animal, or just simply doing something right. for the good of mankind.

And, as entrepreneurs, we need to “give back”, whether it be like you do or by doing a social business, like I do. And, it’s all about being grateful…look at all these posts! Hi Jeff,

I love this, it is very powerful and like-minded to the people I respect and love. Thank you for sharing this. In return I will share with you what I wrote, I will be sending it out to friends, family and clients (who are all friends). I have no concern about sending this out, since I only want to work and play with caring like-minded people.

    Things I am Grateful For:

    1. I am grateful for Mike, my wonderful husband and life mate, who is finding his own unique gifts and taking responsibility for his own life.

    2. I am especially grateful to the most beautiful and loving daughter in the world, my best friend. A young woman, strong and adventurous while still compassionate and delicate. Niki, without your selfless support this year there is no telling where we would be now. Thank you from my full heart!

    3. The great amounts of time I have had this year to find my own heart center through meditation, reading, prayers and the CSLSR.

    4. Fabulous friends, both new and old, who have always supported me as I look inside of myself to find out who the real Sherry is. An ongoing journey.

    5. I am grateful we still have our beautiful home of 20 years and that I may have found the way to save it from foreclosure with the HEAVEN program.

    6. Ongoing good health. I am strong and fit of body and mind. New cells are miraculously growing and old cells are dying out in an ever-continuous dance of life.

    7. I am grateful I have had the opportunity to slow down and make decisions with the help of the Universal Spirit, in the right order, at the right time. These are life-changing decisions and they are good! Giving me the opportunity to train my mad monkey mind and ego from always wanting to take control and drive my life. This past 2 years has given me great stories to share with others on what I have learned on this journey.

    8. I am grateful to have the time to study new ideas, find more fabulous, like-minded people where I can serve their mission and help more people. I do not have to own it or build it all on my own. There are many great people doing great work. Together we are better!

    9. I am grateful to be alive and learning to WAKE UP! Be in the moment, to let go of fear. To continue to take leaps of faith, but with Spirit holding me, not by trial and error, but in action toward an ever-changing goal. Climbing the mountain, one step at a time and enjoying the journey, my companions and the scenery along the path.

    10. I am grateful that my business associates are like-minded and caring during these difficult economic times. That they are doing everything they can to change the flow of their businesses to assist all of us. Allowing me to keep my promises to the people who have believed in me. Their hearts are strong and so are their ethics. Others not as noble could/would have turned their backs on all of us and walked away.

I Thank the Universal Spirit for allowing me to stop spinning so many plates and to really find out what is important to me and how that might assist others on their own path through this economic trial.

    With deep gratitude,
    Sherry Hinrichs

We cultivate gratitude – not for anything we have or anything we’ve done – simply because we ARE and have been given the gift of a life that knows it’s being lived. What a miracle!

Having an “Attitude of Gratitude” continually IS success, and has a value money cannot buy.

    Thanks for the reminder, Jeff.

    Hi, Jeff:

I hope when you see/read all these posts and understand the impact and positive influence you’ve had on all these folks just by stepping outside your own comfort zone, you will realize that you can be your authentic ‘deep’ self and people will still love and support you. Don’t you see that THAT is what people really want…and need…especially in light of everything going on around us these days? People want connection, human-ness. Our businesses need to be heart-centered and we will find true fulfillment only when that is so…

Peace & blessings to you and yours!

Jeff, you’re right on target. I don’t know why you were nervous. Gratitude is the natural response for those who know that the world does not revolve around them. They understand the plight of others and recognize that all that they have is a gift. In addition, when we pour ourselves into the lives of others, something very, very special occurs. We are blessed beyond belief. The more we give, the more we get back…and not just tangibly. I’m sure you’d agree that the intangible rewards are the most precious of all. God bless, Jason G.

    Hi Jeff:
An absolutely great reminder of all that God has given us to be able to enjoy and be thankful for. Do you ever stop to think of where your next breath comes from, or where it came from in the very beginning? Well, God breathed the breath of life into man when He created him, and that, my friends, is what I am so grateful for today. The breath of life is your LIFE, and I will never be ashamed of my faith and belief in God Almighty for all that He has given me. My prayer for each and every one is to have a very blessed day with your loved ones and family. For without “family”, what would we have? Yes, write down what you are thankful for today. It’s important! One of my very good friends called me first thing this morning and told me his sister had died of cancer, and I’m supposed to think I have it bad because of whatever? No way! Enjoy your families, and have a wonderful day of…..

    Dear Jeff,

Thank you for the wonderful post:) I couldn’t agree more. Ever since I embraced the “attitude of gratitude” I’ve been feeling happier, more optimistic, vibrant and joyous. Gratitude is the best food for the spirit, because it comes from truly getting to know yourself and your power to create whatever reality you wish. Many highly successful people throughout the history knew that true success had to start from within and was embodied in the equilibrium of spiritual, intellectual and physical.
So, the power of gratitude is not “woo woo” and “out there”. It’s common sense when you look at the results of the greatest men who ever lived.
Thank you for being open and for reminding all of us of this wonderful “SOFTWARE” that we come to this world fully equipped with to DOMINATE ANY NICHE OF LIFE WE CHOOSE AND AVOID BEING SLAPPED BY THE BIG G (read however you wish! LOL

Have a happy Thanksgiving, and fellow Americans: try not to kill too many turkeys this time:)

Thanks Jeff. I’m glad you had the courage to share your thoughts on Gratitude. I’ve observed that yes, people do make money without the discipline of gratitude being prominent in their lives but, they rarely keep it and the other areas of their lives are often sadly lacking in happiness.

I don’t think we can effectively help others unless we are consciously aware of how much we have, how much we can do and how much we can achieve and share with others.

If we are aware of these principles, we will most definitely be grateful - each and every day.

I’m a newbie to your list and so far, I love what I have read and learned.

Many thanks - and I’m very grateful to you.

    Hi Jeff,
First email looked at as they came in was yours.
I have read every post but I have found that there are a few items missing.
These may sound harsh but they are not.

The death of a loved one.
I am thankful for the privilege of having that time with them and I always believe they are better off in the peace and tranquillity they now have whether you believe in heaven or not; they can no longer be hurt in any form.

The abandonment by a child to whom you devoted your life to and no longer wants anything to do with you.
I am grateful because I had the joy of those 18 or so years where I was able to teach the rules to live by including GRATITUDE, even though I get none His family does.

I am finding it very hard to make ends meet.
But that gives me strength to keep going, to continue trying to better my IM and my stubbornness in getting my charity web site up and running properly with all the links working and the buttons set up properly as it is so desperately needed here.
    http://Grandmas-Place.info
I trust this is not a worry for you to put the URL up, as I am in the later part of my life I want to get this going and my measly estate will hopefully be enough to care for it once I have gone.

Being broken into and have most of your items stolen that has taken you over 38 years to get together.
But now I do not have to worry about those items any more and once my place is sold I do not have so much to pack. I will miss the items that where precious to me but a memory of them does not take up any space and no one can get them any more.

Your posts has given me the wake up call I needed,
I do not need to fret about these things. I have been able to turn them into A GRATITUDE list as you can see and I trust it will also help others to weather their storms by turning them into sun shinning days for years to come.

Although I am not getting anywhere fast on the net and my income is none existent I am so grateful to my friends on the net and their email (usually 186 per day) sometimes they seam a pain but most of the time they are welcome as I have no close friends as I live in the bush a good distance from most people.
Emails are so great no postage, envelopes or travel to post them. You can write what you want and there is only a slight chance of the recipient not getting it and within a few minutes.

Oh Jeff and All how lucky we are and HOW GRATFULL WE SHOULD ALL BE FOR JUST LIVING.

Thanks Friend I look forward to hearing from you all the time along with all the other friends I have made.

Trust your Thanks Giving was Wonderful
    Take care

Actually, Jeff, I would have to say that the topic of “gratitude” is EXTREMELY relevant to marketing and business-building - if you’re really “in it” for the long haul.

I learned the Discipline of Gratitude from my parents as I helped out in our family-operated grocery store, in a small rural community. Showing gratitude to our customers was high on the list of priorities.

And just like you say, it’s actually a very easy discipline to develop and maintain. We WERE grateful for those customers walking through our front door, and we knew our own success relied on providing those people what they wanted - thus instilling gratitude in THEM as well.

Mutual gratitude, respect, and trust between the business person(s) and the customer are the core foundation of every successful, solid, and growing business. If those components are missing, the business missing them soon will be as well!

Thanks for taking this slight little detour. I’s important for people to know that businesspeople are people first and foremost, and business-minded second. Knowing yourself is vital if you truly to seek to know others - which most real businesses will require of you at some level.

Thanks for being YOU, and for sharing THAT with us today!

I found this ’secret’ out about my marriage. The more grateful I was about my husband the more I loved him. Sometimes I was grateful that he had a job and he was AT it, but the more I reminded myself that I was grateful the less I had to remind myself. It was a game that I played with myself to feel great. The kicker is that about a year after starting my little exercise he came to me and said that he didn’t know why I had become so much more loving over the past year, but that he really appreciated it. He was happier too and I had never said anything to him or even realized that I had changed. That was 20 years ago and it made a good marriage even better.

“But here’s the magic part - when you exercise the
Discipline of Gratitude you will not only be
happier… but you’re going to start to achieve
    more in your life.”

I want to add…gratitude has more possible outcomes beyond happiness and achievement. Gratitude can also lead to helpfulness, sharing and service to people who have not enjoyed many things we tend to take for granted, including food, shelter, safety, education, freedom, etc.

I like your conversation on gratitude…I feel the conversation just begins with happiness and achievement.

Hello Jeff & Greetings from Guatemala,
You are soooo right about taking time to reflect on everything that fills the heart with gratitude.

I live here in Guatemala, I was born in the U.S. but my wife is Guatemalan. We spend our time doing what we can to help improve the standard of living and health of indigenous people, for the most part Kekchi Mayans.

I must confess that I have not in the past put my mind to looking into generating funds via the internet.

Jeff, if you could show me how to, HONESTLY, generate funds, it could definetly expand the sphere of what we do here i.e. I am a teacher and help set up education programs, find sponsors so that, kids that are in families that are so poor that they barely exist, can get an education and we also help collect food and do what we can to get doctors and other health care workers to come here and go with us to various Mayan villages to search out and provide treatment to these people who live in a country where even in the hospitals there is not in mant cases medicine available to treat the peoples healt problems.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, another thing for me to be grateful for, and I hope to hear from you soon.

Gratitude is one of the best resources for resilience there is. It can bring extraordinary success to the creative process, and unfold into new paradigms, of both self-care and service to others. It is an essential chapter in the book of moving ahead, being healthy, enjoying life, becoming solvent.

Thanks, Jeff. Any thread that goes from Meister Eckhart to the mindfulness of the (21stc.) present, must come from a post writer whose resonance is deep and broad.

I appreciate you sharing your thoughts, Jeff. You are exactly right - life is better when we are thankful for what we have rather than gripe about what we don’t have. My father-in-law died a few days before Thanksgiving which required a drive to CO (from MS no less!) for the funeral the day after Thanksgiving. Pretty sucky b/c we were on the road Thanksgiving day. But instead of getting down about how depressing the whole scenario was, I chose to find as much good in it as I could. In the end,I got to enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery in the world (if only for a few hours). I got to see nieces and nephews I hadn’t seen in years. And me, my husband and daughters had some great “bonding time” while driving. So although it was still not pleasant and we all would have preferred more time with him, I discovered that a good attitude could at least make it better. Just one more thing, after many years of trials in my life, I finally learned to wake up thanking God for my past, my present and my future. And when I started doing that, my life began to get better … just like you said! So, thanks again, Jeff, for the reminder and God bless you!
